AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a class for students who need a little extra support in school to prepare them for college. Ms. Sharon Nichols works with students in the academic middle who have the drive to go to college. The formula is simple-raise expectations and provide support. AVID students are enrolled in at lease one of the school's toughest classes such as honors or Advanced Placement. The students then receive support in an academic elective called AVID which is taught during the school day by a trained AVID teacher. Two days a week the students are grouped according to subject area need. Students work in small groups with college students to receive help on difficult assignments or in subjects where they need assistance. Students visit different college campuses to get a good idea about future college attendance.
