I Have A Future

"I Have a Future" (IHAF) is a teenage pregnancy prevention program that targets at risk youth who are trying to make a difference in their lives and their communities.  The program was started at Meharry Medical College in 1987 as a result of the vision and commitment of Dr. Henry Foster.  Because of Dr. Goster's dream, IHAF has impacted the lives of hundreds of youth in the Nashville community.  Currently, there are over 250 active participants who are enrolled at Pearl-Cohn comprehensive Business Magnet High School and several at other area high schools.  Their participation occurs through the use of educational modules, tutoring sessions, field trips and workshops.  The program motivates the youth by preparing them for college, vocational training and/or the job market.  Integral to the success of the program is an increase in the participants' awareness of social and health issues which strengthens their self esteem and confidence.  These qualities are essential for the youth to avoid pregnancy and other destructive behaviors.  As a result they have become role models in their communities.

To remain active in IHAF and qualify for the field trip, the youth must do the following:

  • Remain in school with passing grades
  • Attend Family Life Education classes
  • Participate in fundraisers like the fashion show
  • Participate in community activities like the African Street Festival and the MLK Day March
  • Maintain good relations with other participants and adult mentors
  • Refrain from becoming pregnant or impregnating anyone

Should participants violate any of these rules and regulations, they will be placed on probation pending a review by the program.  If participants indicate an understanding of their actions and the consequences and demonstrate efforts toward improvement, the program has the option to reinstate them.
