A Smaller Learning Community is a smaller division within a large high school where groups of students interact with an assigned leader, teachers, staff and guidance counselor. The purpose of the SLC is to reduce the dropout rate, close the achievement gap, decrease discipline incidents, increase student participation, improve graduation rate and to prepare all students for life after high school.
Pearl-Cohn High School has implemented a Freshman Academy. It is a smaller learning community in which first-time ninth-graders are separated from the rest of the school and taught by teams of teachers. The Freshman Academy program is focused on helping students make a smoother and more positive transition to high school.
The Advisor/Advisee Program is an important element in the Freshman Academy. Students build a healthy relationship with an adult as they develop character and leadership skills, compare and contrast career clusters and connect with themselves, their peers and other adults. |
